Pilates

SMALL GROUP MAT BASED CLASSES WHICH ARE FUN, FRIENDLY AND RELAXING!

Suitable for mixed abilities, exercises modified for a safe & effective workout

WHAT IS PILATES?

Pilates is low-impact and combines standing and mat based exercises to develop flexibility and muscular strength and endurance movements.  Pilates emphasises use of the core but gives a full body workout.

Pilates is named from its creator, Joseph Pilates, (1880 – 1967)  who developed the exercises.  Things have changed since Joseph Pilates first developed his series of classical exercises and with the latest research and knowledge they been adapted to create a safe and effective way of exercising suitable for the beginner upwards.  To tone up, increase strength, improve your posture, balance and flexibility!

Pilates can do a number of things. The exercises are designed to help you learn how to isolate the right muscle to do the right job. As we go through life our bodies get used to a certain way of sitting or walking which isn’t necessarily comfortable or correct. Some muscles therefore do their own job but also that of other muscles which have become weak. Performing Pilates exercises will help you identify these weaker muscles (say, your glutes) and we will learn how to strengthen them. Pilates therefore will lengthen the tight and strengthen the weak. Pilates also focuses on improving mobility and flexibility. During each exercise you will be using and strengthening your core.

By practising Pilates regularly, you can achieve a number of health benefits, including:

Improved core strength and stability
Improved posture and balance
Improved flexibility
Prevention and treatment of back pain

Classes are run in blocks, pay as you go places when space allows.

Our next course runs through to 11th April 2019.
